Area track and field athletes among winners at county meet

first_imgLed by Christian Brothers Academy’s (CBA) team victory, area track and field athletes excelled at the Monmouth County Indoor Championships.The Colts easily defended their championship, rolling up 118 points. Matawan Regional High School (42) and Middletown High School North (25) were a distant second and third.Holmdel High School led the area girls, finishing third (33) behind Freehold Township High School (57) and Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School (34).The meet was held on Jan. 10 at the John Bennett Indoor Athletic Complex in Toms River.State cross-country champion Mike McClemens led the Colts’ parade, winning the 800 meters (1:57.88).CBA rolled up 25 points in the 3,200 behind its cross-country talent. Aidan Durney (9:46.69) finished first, while Josh Kruppa (9:51.64) and Nick Trigani (9:55.92) were second and third, respectively. Sean Martinek (10:12.17) was sixth. Chris Alexander won the 55-meter hurdles (7.82), and the Colts took the 4×400 relay in 3:29.39. Justin Lippert and Tom O’Neill, who led Middletown North to its finest cross-country season in the fall, ran first and second in the 1,600, with Lippert finishing first in 4:21.65 and O’Neill coming right behind in 4:21.84.Matawan’s Matt Isaacson won the pole vault on fewer misses at 14-0.County cross-country champion Marin Warner of Holmdel led the girls, adding the indoor 1,600 title to her fall championship. The Hornets’ junior won the 1,600 by more than 10 seconds in 5:02.40. She came back and ran the 800, finishing third (2:18.50).Matawan had a pair of champions. On the track, Samantha Anderson won the 400 (58.94) and was third in the 55 (7.42). Nicole Macco gave the Huskies a sweep of the pole vault, winning at 11-0. She was the only vaulter to soar that high. The high jump championship went to Mater Dei High School’s Fallon Quigley, the only jumper over the bar at 5-0.The NJSIAA State Relays are next on the track and field calendar. Group IV goes on Jan. 16 (boys) and Jan. 17 (girls), while Group I and Group III is on Jan. 18 for boys and girls. Group II, Non-Public A and Non-Public B are on Jan. 19.The Shore Conference Championships are on Jan. 24.The NJSIAA Central Jersey Sectional Championships begin on Jan. 31, with Group I and II. Group III and Group IV are on Feb. 7.State group championships are on Feb. 14 for Group I and Group IV, and Feb. 15 for Group II, Group III, Non- Public A and Non-Public B.The Meet of Champions is on Feb. 22.All state and Shore Conference meets are at the Bennett Indoor Complex.last_img
