Gulmarg 100 per cent booked as crowd pours in to celebrate New Year

(Photo: Rouf A Roshangar)As the enthusiasm around the new year is gaining momentum, hotels in Gulmarg are jam-packed, as tourists from across the country have arrived in the famous ski resort in north Kashmir on New Year’s Eve.Gulmarg is known to hold adventure sports activities around this time of the year. On the eve of New Year celebrations, the hotel occupancy in Gulmarg is 100 per cent. For the evening, Kashmiri musical and cultural events, parties have been arranged by private hotels for tourists. Director of Tourism Nisar Ahmad Wani said,”It is the 100 per cent booking in Gulmarg and this is a positive response which indicates we will have good season of winter tourism ahead. Tourists from across the globe and other states of India have arrived here [Gulmarg] to celebrate the New Year.””We will hold snow sports events for them which includes snow cycling, skiing, ice-skating and ice-climbing, The aim is to send the message of peace in Kashmir and to attract more tourists to Kashmir valley,” he said.Wani also said that though there is less snowfall in Kashmir so far but hopefully in coming days more snowfall is predicted and it will attract more tourists towards this destination.”This year 8.5 lakh tourists have visited Kashmir and bookings for the coming months are also encouraging,” he said.Hoteliers Club Gulmarg’s President Mukhtar Ahmad Shah said that they have hosted parties for the tourists to celebrate the New Year.”We will hold the traditional Kashmiri music event for them tonight. Tourist response is very good and all hotels in Gulmarg are sold out.
