College of the Canyons offensive tackle E.J. DellaRipa (77) has signed with Vanderbilt to play in the 2015 season.Vanderbilt football signed junior college offensive tackle E.J. DellaRipa on Tuesday, adding depth to a position where both starters return for the 2015 season.DellaRipa, a 6-foot-4, 300-pounder, was an all-conference selection at College of the Canyons in California, where he started 10 games at right tackle. He originally committed to Fresno State in March, but he re-opened his recruiting shortly after to consider Louisville and Vanderbilt.Though he will be a sophomore at Vanderbilt with three years of eligibility remaining, DellaRipa is only 18 years old. His birthday is Oct. 1, so he played nearly half of his freshman season at College of the Canyons as a 17-year-old.“We are extremely pleased and excited to have E.J. joining our football program this season,” Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason said in a news release. “E.J.’s a talented young lineman who developed tremendously at College of the Canyons. He’s an excellent addition to the 2015 signing class, our offensive line corps and our entire roster.”Vanderbilt returns both starting tackles in juniors Andrew Jelks and Will Holden for the 2015 season, and four starters overall are back on the offensive line. DellaRipa is the 19th signee of the 2015 recruiting class, including five offensive linemen.“E.J.’s upside is extremely high. … He practices and lifts hard every day. He’s the consummate team player,” College of the Canyons coach Ted Iacenda said in a news release. “E.J. knows what he wants and knows what it takes to make it happen. He plays with a great motor and brings both a tremendous pass-blocking ability and a physical attitude to the run game.”There is a small past connection between DellaRipa and Vanderbilt. His junior college coach’s brother, Andy Iacenda, was a fullback for the Commodores in 1987.Vanderbilt opens its season on Sept. 5 at home against Western Kentucky.Reach Adam Sparks at 615-259-8010 and on Twitter @AdamSparks.
