Tax season is here and it is important that seniors receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) file their 2010 return. The province will refund the full amount of provincial income tax paid by seniors who received the GIS in 2010. “This tax refund is one more example of how we are making life more affordable for seniors across the province,” said Maureen MacDonald, acting Minister of Finance. “We know that every dollar is important, that’s why we wanted to put this money back into the hands of seniors.” Seniors do not have to apply for the refund, and there is no form to fill out. The Department of Finance is administering the program by using 2010 tax returns to assess eligibility and process the refund. Refunds will be mailed in late summer or early fall, after most income tax returns are processed. This refund will return about $10 million to about 18,000 seniors across the province.
